VU Western Lightning Wins License for 2009 Victorian Netball League

23 July 2008

Victoria University Western Lightning State League Netball club has secured one of only 10 licenses handed out for the new Victorian Netball League starting in 2009.

All clubs in State League were asked to submit proposals to Netball Victoria if they wished to be included in the new structure.

VU Western Lightning - formerly separate clubs Victoria University Flames and Altona became a merged entity at the beginning of this season in order to strengthen their case for inclusion in 2009.
Victoria University as the clubs major supporter contributed signifiicantly to the submission and the Western Bulldogs also lent support to the bid.

Secretary of the Lightning's application steering committee Heather Neville said "it's great for the Western suburbs to have a club given this support."

The competition will see each club field a Championship, Division 1 and under 19's grade. VU Western Lightning already fields three sides in State League: Championship, Division 1 and Division 2, demonstrating its depth of players since the merger.

Clubs in the VNL are: North East Alliance, Monash University Central, VU Western Lightning, Eastern Ariels, Peninsula Waves, Bayside Eastside Southern, Geelong Netball Club, Ballarat Pride, Boroondara Power and Hume City Falcons.

To celebrate the announcement and the current success of the Championship team (sitting 4th on the ladder) as they vye for finals this season; the University  is getting behind the game taking place August 6 at 7.pm vs Knox (5th place) at the State Netball Hockey Centre, Royal Park. We'd like to see as many people from the University community at the game to cheer the VU Western Lightning on.
