Prevention & risk

Australia lags well behind comparable countries in preventing and reducing the main risk factors that contribute to poor health and the rising rate of preventable chronic diseases.

Chronic disease affects individuals, their families and carers. It impacts participation in education, the workforce and the community, leading to labour inefficiency and hampered economic growth

One in two Australians have one or more chronic diseases. More than one-third of these cases could be prevented by addressing risk factors such as physical inactivity, smoking and alcohol use.
