This unit covers the theory regarding chemistry, pharmacology and toxicology of chemical peeling agents to ensure that students are able to perform safe and effective chemical resurfacing procedures. Students will also cover the theoretical concepts of microdermabrasion and collagen induction therapy. Previously acquired knowledge of dermal science, wound care and chemistry will be integrated and applied within this unit to enable the student to expand their knowledge with regards to wound healing and skin barrier function as relevant to resurfacing procedures. Evidence based practical application of the theory covered in this unit will be performed at the Victoria University Dermal Therapies Teaching Clinic with a minimum of thirty (30) supervised hours to be completed as a hurdle requirement. As a part of this practicum, students will further develop their skills in professional communication and consultation, the development of safe and effective treatment protocols and professional reporting of cases to meet legal requirements.
