Professor Borland retired as Dean, Graduate Research in December 2016. She continues her association with Victoria University as Emeritus Professor. In her role as Dean, Graduate Research, Helen was responsible for overseeing the University's research degree programs, including training and support for research students and postgraduate research policy development and administration.
She is passionate about postgraduate research in universities and has supervised many research students to the completion of their degrees.
In 2006, Professor Borland received the Vice Chancellor's Peak Award for research supervision in recognition of her excellence in supervisory practice over an extended period, particularly in working with students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
Prior to taking up her current role Professor Borland made a major contribution in academic leadership roles including Head of the School of Communication, Culture and Languages at VU, and Associate Dean (International).
Professor Borland has authored four monographs and edited three collections as well as having published book chapters and articles in refereed journals.
She regularly serves on advisory committees, as well as examining theses internationally and being an international reviewer for the Australian Research Council. She is also a past President of the Australian and New Zealand Communication Association.
