On the back of Victoria University's stellar results at the Southern University Games comes news that VU student Jarrod Gilchrist was part of a gold-medal-winning men's waterpolo team at the World University Games recently held in Belgrade, Serbia.
The team made history when it went through undefeated to become the first non-European team to win at men's waterpolo. It was also Australia's first international University Games gold medal in the sport.
Jarrod , 18, a first-year Bachelor of Applied Science (Physical Education) student, played a key role in helping to defeat Croatia 6-4 in the final match.
The other VU student representing Australia at the Games, Liam Adams, finished 10th in a close 5000metre-race.
While short of his personal best recorded in Melbourne in March, the 22-year-old Bachelor of Exercise Science (Human Movement) student, managed to stay with the main pack until the end.
The 184-member Australian World University Summer Games team ended their 2009 campaign on a high with an overall tally of five gold, two silver, and one bronze medal - the best ever result for an Australian team at the Games.
