Lock-up bike sheds with showers, toilets coming to Footscray campuses

Two state-of-the-art bicycle sheds are about to be installed at the University’s two Footscray campuses.

Footscray Nicholson bike hub will house 37 bicycle rails, four showers, three toilets and one urinal.

Footscray Park bike hub will house 97 bicycle rails, also with four showers, three toilets and one urinal.

Construction will start on the bicycle hub at the Beanland building at the Footscray Nicholson campus next week and it will be ready for use from the beginning of Orientation week in 2010.

The bicycle hub at Footscray Park will be situated in the new Learning Commons and Exercise Sports Science building, which is scheduled for completion in July 2010.

VU recognises that safety is a prime issue for its staff and students and both bicycle hubs will be fully secured facilities. The bike hubs will be accessible by fob and staff and students will secure their bikes to the rack inside the secured area.

Showers and changing lockers will also be provided so cyclists will be able to have a shower and change before starting work or classes. Users will also be able to store items in the lockers, as these will also be made secure. What better way to start the day ? you have done your exercise and you are mentally alert for the rest of the day.

The aim of this project is to encourage more VU staff, students and visitors to cycle to the Footscray campuses, and also to ride between the two campuses.

An added benefit is a reduction in carbon emissions, as staff and students replace motor vehicle and public transport use with pedal power.

More details about the bike hubs will be provided ahead of their launch.
