Do you experience knee pain? Participants needed

Staff and students from the School of Biomedical and Health Sciences are investigating the effect of oral glucosamine supplementation in people experiencing regular knee pain. Participants must be aged between 18-35 years old and experience regular, mild knee pain that has not been diagnosed.

Participants will be required to:

  • Attend 2 meetings, one before, and one after the trial
  • Take 3 tablets a day, for 8 weeks. The tablets will contain glucosamine sulphate or an inactive ingredient (placebo)
  • Fill out 2 short questionnaires: one at the end of each week of the trial period, and another filled out in Week 1, Week 4 & Week 8 of the trial period
  • Fill out a daily log during the trial, listing any medications or treatments used and their level of physical activity.

The trial will commence early July 2011 and run for an 8 week period.

You will not be able to participate if you:

  • Are pregnant or breast feeding
  • Have a previous history of knee surgery, or you have been diagnosed with a knee injury
  • Have allergies to any of the following:  seafood, glucosamine, shark cartilage, chondroitin or dimethyl sulphone maltodextrin, wheat, corn, potatoes and other foods high in starch
  • Are on medications such as Warfarin, insulin or cancer medication
  • Have celiac disease or cancer
  • Are currently taking products contacting Glucosamine Sulphate or have been taking these products in the last 8 weeks
