You are invited to a public discussion featuring Dr José Ramos-Horta on 'Preventing Conflicts, Ending Wars and Building Peace'.
The event will commence with an address by Dr Ramos-Horta, followed by a probing discussion with David Manne. Questions from the audience will then be invited.
Dr Ramos-Horta has just returned from working with the United Nations reviewing their peace keeping activities.
David Manne is the Executive Director of the Refugee & Immigration Legal Centre and was appointed to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Advisory Board of Eminent Persons.
About the Controversies series
This event is part of the public seminar series called ‘Controversies’ hosted by Victoria University. The seminar series provides a space and access to local, national and international experts to participate in thoughtful dialogue on complex and current issues in Australia.
Speaking at the event
Dr José Ramos-Horta, is the former President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste and 1996 Nobel Peace Prize winner.
Dr José Ramos-Horta’s determined pursuit of justice for Timor-Leste earned him worldwide recognition as an exponent of peace in the struggle for justice and human rights.
Currently José Ramos-Horta is reviewing United Nations peace keeping operations in his role as Chair of the recently established United Nations High Level Independent Panel on Peace Operations.
David Manne is a human rights lawyer and migration agent, and Executive Director of the Refugee & Immigration Legal Centre (RILC). He has worked in various capacities assisting refugees and asylum seekers for over 20 years.
