Seminar: Northern Syria’s Feminist Revolution

Come and hear journalists and freedom fighters discuss the most progressive women's revolution in history, this Saturday 4 November at VU's City Flinders Campus.
Kurdish women gained international prominence during the siege of the north Syrian town of Kobane in 2014-15. Their heroic frontline role in the resistance to the brutal, women-hating Islamic State gangs produced both widespread admiration and curiosity which has continued to this day.
But as attention-grabbing as the continuing military struggle is, it is not the most important thing. In the liberated zones of northern Syria, women are playing a leading role in building a new kind of society – one which is marked by a radical grassroots democracy, ethnic and religious inclusivity, and by an unprecedented effort to empower women.
Arguably, this is the most feminist revolution in history. For those interested in women’s rights and progressive social change, this experience is worthy of serious study and practical solidarity and support.
Speakers
Frederike Geerdink is a Dutch journalist who was based in Turkey from 2006. In 2015, she was detained and then expelled by the Erdogan government for her pro-Kurdish reporting. She will speak on the Kurdish women’s struggle in Turkey & Northern Syria.
Hawzhin Azeez came to Australia at the age of 11 as a Kurdish refugee from Iraq. She later became an academic at Newcastle University, but today she works for the Rojava Reconstruction Board in Northern Syria. She will speak about life for women in the liberated zones of Syria.
Havin Guneser is a Kurdish engineer, journalist, and women’s rights activist. She is a spokesperson for the International Initiative for Freedom for Abdullah Öcalan—Peace in Kurdistan. She will speak on the Kurdish contribution to the women’s global fight for freedom.
