This Non-Award unit will assist practising Australian Lawyers to enhance their skills in this very specialised area – Migration Law and it will equip them with greater confidence in dealing with migration cases and clients. It is specifically targeted at lawyers wishing to practice in the migration law field in light of the deregulation of the Migration industry that is currently taking place. It will assist students in navigating the maze of prescriptive regulations, as well as understanding the visa application process, cancellation and review mechanisms.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the various levels of legislation, case law and policy and the Australian immigration system through interpretation and application of Australian migration law in a variety of scenarios;
  2. Undertake research to assess current and relevant information from a range of sources to develop and deliver migration advice;
  3. Demonstrate sound knowledge of relevant legislation to provide advice on procedures for visa applications, cancellations and merits and judicial review;
  4. Analyse the role and regulation of legal practitioners;
  5. Formulate and implement communication strategies orientated to key stakeholders including clients.
