Overview

Begin training for a career as a cook or a chef while you complete your secondary school studies with the Certificate II in Cookery SIT20421.

Delivered exclusively through our Vocational Education & Training Delivered to Secondary Students (VDSS) program, this introductory cooking course equips you with basic knowledge and skills to work in an assisting roles in the kitchen, or progress to a cookery course.

You'll learn how to:

  • safely use commercial kitchen equipment
  • work effectively and professionally as a kitchen team member
  • prepare, plate and present dishes under supervision
  • keep areas clean and work hygienically to prevent food-borne illness
  • respond to customers' special requests.

Within the cooking course, you will be able to choose subject (unit) where you learn to make cakes and other baked goods, or focus on salads and main courses.

Course structure

To be awarded the SIT20421 Certificate II in Cookery, 13 units must be completed consisting of:

  • 7 core units
  • 6 elective units, of which:

- 4 units must be from Group A, Group B or Group C

- 2 units from Group A, Group B, Group C or Group D.

  • takeaway cook.

You will also be prepared for the next level of study at Victoria University to become a professional chef or cook.
