A premier research experience
I switched over to VU because of the unique opportunity to undertake my honours year in collaboration with ISEAL (Institute of Sport, Exercise & Active Living) and the Western Bulldogs Football Club.
Jack Hynes
Bachelor of Applied Science (Honours) (Human Movement)
VU’s strong ties with the Western Bulldogs Football Club allowed Jack Hynes to take on a performance analysis role within the club, which complemented his honours studies and gave rise to an unforgettable year. Jack is currently completing a PhD at VU, titled 'Chasing the dream: the negotiation of identity through the process of becoming an AFL player'.
“After I completed my Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science at a different university, I switched over to VU because of the unique opportunity to undertake my honours year in collaboration with ISEAL (Institute of Sport, Exercise & Active Living) and the Western Bulldogs Football Club.
During my honours year, I was able to take on a service role within the club, which focused on performance analysis tasks at AFL matches and training. This role allowed me to gain experience working in an elite sporting environment and develop practical skills. The combination of working in this position and alongside my supervisor at VU really helped me contextualise my knowledge and learn to apply it out on the field. I found the course to be very flexible, meaning I could study around my work commitments.
My greatest career achievements so far include working throughout the finals series, travelling interstate with the team, and being fortunate enough to work in the coach’s box on AFL Grand Final Day. The whole year was amazing and filled with special moments that I will remember fondly for a long time.
I am completing a PhD at VU, while also working as a casual tutor. I am also still working at the Western Bulldogs Football club in my performance analysis/skill acquisition service role.”
