Practical placement opportunities and variety of subjects proved to be a winning combo for Vanessa Abela, who found focus – and employment with Netball Victoria – as a result of her time at VU.
“Throughout high school, I was never sure what job I wanted – I just knew it had to be related to sport. So, I really enjoyed the variety of subjects offered through VU’s Sports Management and Sport Science double degree, as I was able to explore many different avenues.
"I completed placements at V Squad, a football development program for young boys, and at the Melbourne Vixens, where I was the volunteer squad coordinator. I also volunteered at a number of AFL events including the Women’s Luncheon, Grand Final Breakfast, International AFL Cup, and Fox Footy Parade. My volunteer work led to paid work at official AFL events too. Thanks to all of this work experience, I made many new connections in the sporting industry.
"My greatest career achievement would be getting a job at Netball Victoria while still studying at VU. I was offered the part-time position after my placement with the Vixens, and as soon as I completed my final week of uni, my contract was made full time.
"I am currently the product development coordinator with Netball Victoria, where I manage new programs. The role is quite broad and I’m involved in many different tasks. I’m really excited to continue in this role and see what opens up in future.”
