Helena's going deep into skin
The equipment that we have and the access to supervisors with a lot of knowledge is fantastic.

Bachelor of Dermal Sciences
Helena Jingwi shares how undertaking a Bachelor of Dermal Sciences at VU has given her the hands-on experience to realise what she’d like to specialise in – and how much she loves studying in the VU City Tower.
“I did my diploma of beauty therapy years back – I worked in clinic, and then just decided to up my skills.
“It’s something I've always wanted to do, the more intensive side of beauty therapy: lasers, hair removal, tattoo removal.
“So VU was the place that had the best course for that, and the most recognised in the industry. That's definitely why I came here.”
Making connections with students and clients
“I love the students – I’ve made some really good friends. We also have the clinic here as well, where I love to meet strangers and work on different skin types and skin conditions.
A hands-on clinical experience
“The equipment that we have and the access to supervisors with a lot of knowledge is fantastic. The classes here are hands-on.
“Working in clinic, it opens us up to a broad range of people, helps us better our skills in talking to others and explaining to what the treatments will offer them.
“It helps us practise our practical skills as well, so when we do get out into the real world and out into proper clinics, we already have that experience there, and we're not so fresh.”
A towering campus to inspire
“The City Tower is beautiful, with amazing facilities for us all. Amazing machines, top of the line lasers, beautiful equipment and products. It's stunning.
“There’s a wonderful student centre as well – it's good to have so we can mingle with some of the other units.”
Into a future of wound care and beyond
“I've decided that I want to specialise more in wound care. I developed a love for it last year.
“I really want to help the older generation by going around to Aged Care Centres, helping them with wounds that they might not be able to heal, implementing laser treatments, LEDs, those type of treatments as well.
“I really enjoy skin needling and tattoo removal, and those treatments that you can see more of an immediate effect on too. But I definitely think I’ll end up in wound care.
“I'm hoping to work with a dermatologist or a doctor that specialises in wounds, vessels, things like that. And then eventually the big goal is to open up my own clinic and work for myself.
“I think this course in general is eye-opening. People think that it's very surface level aesthetics – chemical peels, laser hair removal – but once we get deeper, it really broadens your horizons.
“That's the beauty of this course. It's really just wide, wide, wide.”
