Job skills training delivers results

Former international student Ravina Kamble says Victoria University's (VU) job skills training helped her to secure her first professional position in Australia.

Ravina, who's from Mumbai in India, commenced an internship as a Graduate Signal Engineer at JMD Railtech Group (JMDR) shortly after completing her Master of Engineering, specialising in power systems.

During the second year of my masters, I started participating in various activities like resume-building workshops, workshops for interview preparation, job fairs etc.

Ravina says she also updated her LinkedIn profile and started following electrical based companies, when she saw that JMDR was hiring graduates. She applied, was interviewed and commenced the internship shortly after. With more than 300 staff and consultants, and collaborations with large rail organisations in India, the UK and South East Asia, as well as Australia, JMDR offers opportunities for her to progress her career.

Having graduated with a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering from Mumbai University in 2015 and being an active member of the Electrical Engineering Students' Association in Mumbai, Ravina says she chose VU because of its profile in her field.

“When I was preparing myself for the process of studying abroad, Australia was on my list and when I was going through the profiles of various universities, the profile of VU was outstanding compared to other universities. Hence I decided to apply for the Masters of Engineering (Power Systems). What stood out for me at VU were the facilities, the quality of the professors and lecturers, the structure of the course, and the support for students to build their professional profile.

I also liked the fact that VU provided security services for students, multicultural activities on campus, various clubs for social networking and exposure to students across the globe.

“My ambition is to gain experience and detailed knowledge of railway signalling,” says Ravina. “I also want to develop my skills in railway signalling software and project management. Within five years, I want to be a successful professional.” Ravina is confident she is on a journey to success.
