Playing to her strengths: Kate’s story
Despite being a short time, I had the opportunity to build real connections with course lecturers, Western Bulldogs staff and fellow students.

Graduate Certificate in Strength and Conditioning
Personal trainer Kate Mackie describes how the Graduate Certificate in Strength and Conditioning at Victoria University (VU) elevated her knowledge and skillset – and, thanks to VU’s strong industry partnerships, got her up close and personal with a top AFL team.
“I had been wanting to go back to university and finish my studies, but other degrees go for at least three to five years.
“Being a business owner, I simply didn’t have the time. So when I saw the opportunity to study for six months and gain experience in the industry I was wanting to enter by doing the Graduate Certificate in Strength and Conditioning, I thought it was perfect for me.”
Creating connection and opportunities
“Despite being a short time, I had the opportunity to build real connections with course lecturers, Western Bulldogs staff and fellow students.
“It’s a great course for anyone wanting to pursue their career in strength and conditioning or elevate their knowledge of this specialization while working in an adjacent field.
“I highly recommend this course to anyone looking to further their studies and to gain firsthand experiences that the Western Bulldogs have to offer.”
A learning model that eases transitions
“I like the
VU Block Model® way of learning and studying one subject at a time. Being a mature-age student, it was a great way to ease my way back into studying again.
“The VU Block Model is good for someone that might work full-time or is returning to university again. Doing one subject at a time gets you to understand the unit more in depth.”
Industry highlights
“A highlight of the course extracurriculars – shadow shifts and masterclasses – was being able to see how Des O’Sullivan (AFL Senior Strength & Conditioning Coach) trained the athletes while sharing his knowledge and experiences with the class, taking the time to answer questions.
“In the AFL space I have met many staff across the Physical Performance team, from rehabilitation to high performance coaches – as well as players – who took the time to make me feel welcome.
“I also really enjoyed the VFL match experience. I was able to meet coaching staff, rehabilitation assistants and nutritionists, and it was a great insight into how it all goes behind the scenes.
“I hope one day I can get the opportunity to be a part of a team as a strength and conditioning coach.”
