Sport & education: Gene's winning career combination

Gene Vocale is achieving what many people only dream of – turning his passion into his profession. He’s followed his love of sport into a Bachelor of Physical Education and Sports Science and is now completing his masters to become a teacher.

When choosing my course, I already knew VU was one of the top universities globally for sport. I soon discovered their Physical Education and Sport Science degree was perfect for me with its many career pathways.

I grew up immersed in sports – I still play BIGV basketball for the Sunbury Jets. I’ve also coached a range of sports, which led to my interest in PE and health teaching.

During my VU degree I gained placements in several schools, working with kids with many different backgrounds, ages and abilities. These experiences motivated me to pursue a teaching career.

VU’s Indigenous Academic Unit – Moondani Balluk – has provided me with tremendous academic and financial support, which eliminated many of the typical financial and emotional university stresses.

My Aboriginal background is the Monaro tribe in Gippsland, Victoria from my father’s side.The passing of my father soon after I finished school was so difficult for me; I became unmotivated and down. The financial strains at university were tough too – if it wasn’t for the help from VU I’m not sure if I could’ve achieved all I have.

Now, while studying my Master of Teaching (Secondary), I have completed my first school placement. It’s further solidified my desire to teach and has given me amazing insight into what being a teacher entails, and boosted both my confidence and my CV.

I tell others if they want to be part of a university with a positive environment and culture and a focus on industry experience they should choose VU. Now I just can’t wait to start teaching full time!”
