Overview

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to work within the health care system and engage effectively with other health professionals, including writing referral reports. This unit applies to individuals working in health or community services who work autonomously with clients in the provision of services.


The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce and extend knowledge and skill competence within set and controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes and performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

  • researched and selected relevant information about the Australian health care system for use in own practice, and;
  • developed at least 3 referral reports for different clients using appropriate language and terminology.

Students will also be expected to demonstrate the following knowledge:

  • structure, function and interrelationships of the Australian health care system;
  • health care professions and allied health services, how they interrelate and their relationship to specific area of practice;
  • scope of own practice and limitations of own role within the health system;
  • health system funding and financial structures, and implications for practice and clients;
  • current and emerging health industry issues;
  • other services to which the practitioner may refer clients, and;
  • referral reports.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by Victoria University and/or via the Victoria University e-learning system.
