This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to install backflow prevention devices. It does not include the commissioning or testing of backflow prevention devices or arrangements.
Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, incl the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.
Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:
* installing three different backflow prevention devices one being low hazard rating, one being a medium hazard rating, and one being a high hazard rating from the list below, including pipework to inlet of the backflow device and ancillary equipment.
* Low hazard device defined as:
* dual-check valve with atmospheric port
* dual-check valve
* dual-check valve with intermediate vent
* atmospheric vacuum breaker
* single check valve (testable)
* single check detector assembly (testable).
* Medium hazard testable device defined as:
* double-check valve assembly
* double-check detector assembly
* pressure type vacuum breaker.
* High hazard testable device defined as:
* registered break tank
* registered air gap
* reduced pressure zone device
* reduced pressure detector assembly.
The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by Victoria University and/or via the Victoria University e-learning system.
