Overview

In this unit, students will explore evidence-based teaching strategies for mathematics in the early years (Foundation to Year 2). The focus will be on the Number and Algebra strand and how Measurement and Geometry and Statistics and Probability can be integrated across this strand. Students will build their capacity to plan and sequence lessons that respond to children’s prior understandings and mathematical thinking, while encouraging engagement and positive mindsets. Students will engage in the practices and strategies that are used in the early years to develop numeracy and mathematical reasoning in students. These include open-ended questions, problem-solving, rich tasks, mathematical games and learn how ICT and multimedia can enhance the teaching of Mathematics.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an awareness of the key concepts, skills and strategies used in the teaching and learning of Number in Foundation to Grade 2.
  2. Use a variety of assessment tools to identify student learning needs in the relation to the big ideas in Number.
  3. Observe students’ mathematical behaviour and use data to plan learning activities that are differentiated to meet diverse needs
  4. Plan, implement, and evaluate sequences of teaching that promote the four proficiencies of Mathematics.
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of current curriculum, pedagogy and appropriate technologies in designing effective mathematics learning experiences in the early years.
