Overview

This unit provides an introduction to key concepts and principles in language testing and assessment. It covers theoretical approaches to assessment and testing of language skills in the contexts of various language programs including General English and English for Academic Purposes (EAP). Directly or indirectly, language teaching and feedback can be shaped and influenced by both formal testing and classroom-based assessment, while knowledge of a range of approaches to testing knowledge of testing is often necessary to understand and apply research into language teaching and practice.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Recognise the difference between formative and summative assessment, and the different types of tests and assessment approaches available according to purposes and contexts;
  2. Understand key concepts of such as validity, reliability, washback and authenticity and how to apply them when evaluating or critiquing tests;
  3. Appraise debates and issues surrounding language testing and testing with reference to approaches used in established internationally recognised tests;
  4. Explore current and emerging trends in language testing and research into testing;
  5. Adapt or design assessment tasks for specific teaching contexts.
