This unit focuses on experiential learning as an important tool in working with young people and vulnerable adults. It prioritises an approach which is learning by doing. The unit will explore the theoretical framework and research that supports this learning theory. Students develop knowledge and understanding of the nature of experiential learning and non-formal and informal learning as methods to engage and re-engage vulnerable young people and adults in lifelong learning. The unit will take a theory and practice approach so that students get an opportunity to apply theory to practical examples and settings. This will be achieved through the design of an experiential learning program that will highlight how the application of the different models of learning can benefit vulnerable young people and adults and promote learning in diverse settings and on diverse topics. Throughout the unit, students review and critique a range of theoretical learning models that are underpinned by experiential learning theory and practice in order to gain skills and competencies for working effectively with specialised communities, especially young people.
