Overview

This unit examines contemporary approaches to project planning and control, integrating theoretical frameworks with practical applications in complex project environments. Students will critically analyse project lifecycle planning, from conceptualisation through feasibility assessment to project monitoring and control. The unit emphasises the evaluation and application of advanced project control methodologies, including earned value management, time and cost planning techniques, and resource management strategies. Through critical examination of contemporary project management theories and practices, students will learn to design comprehensive project management plans, while building expertise in performance measurement and project monitoring and control. The unit is aligned with Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK®) professional standards.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Critically reflect on contemporary project planning and control frameworks, synthesising theoretical foundations with emerging developments in project management methodology;
  2. Design and evaluate comprehensive project management plans for complex projects, incorporating various management strategies;
  3. Critically analyse and synthesise advanced scheduling and cost management techniques, demonstrating mastery in their application for effective project planning, budgeting and resource optimisation;
  4. Evaluate project performance using advanced monitoring techniques, and formulate evidence-based strategies for successful project delivery; and
  5. Critically review and assess emerging digital tools, such as Generative Artificial Intelligence applications, to enhance project management practices.
