Overview

This unit will cover aspects of lifespan development from a biopsychosocial approach and explore key pathophysiological conditions that may affect different life stages. Students will develop a broad foundation of knowledge in relation to disease pathology, pharmacology and prehospital management and treatments, incorporating relevant aspects of the National Safety and Quality Health Service standards. Students will be taken through relevant lifespan conditions with areas to be covered including Reproductive pathophysiology and pathologies, Obstetrics and parturition, Newborn care, Paediatrics and adolescence care through to and including, senescence and the impact of normal and abnormal age related changes in geriatric cohorts. Students will develop a critical awareness of how culture and cultural beliefs impact lifespan development.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Articulate a physiological and anatomical overview of pregnancy including conception, embryological through to fetal development, parturition, labour and delivery and common obstetrics pathologies and emergencies, including their prehospital management and treatments;
  2. Indicate the general pharmacological and non pharmacological applications to obstetric, newborn and paediatric patient prehospital management and treatment;
  3. Determine physiological, anatomical, psychosocial and cultural factors impacting on paediatric and adolescent development, including the common pathophysiological conditions, their prehospital assessment and management;
  4. Substantiate the pathophysiology of selected non-traumatic and traumatic gynaecological and male reproductive disorders including the common causes of subfertility in the population and the current medical treatments; and
  5. Delineate the physiological, anatomical,l psychosocial and cultural changes related to normal and abnormal ageing, including the general principles of prehospital management of older adults.
