Overview

This unit encourages students to integrate existing knowledge and skills and expand on these in new situations across the Speech Pathology communication domains. This unit will explore the Cognitive Communication and Hearing Speech Pathology domains in a series of indirect, consultancy, and advocacy-based speech pathology scenarios in working with individuals across the lifespan and from diverse backgrounds, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and cultures. The unit will explore speech pathology case studies necessitating consideration and interrogation of a range of professional and ethical issues and the role of the speech pathologist alongside that of other professionals in individual care. This unit will continue to explore issues and methods related to assessment and measurement of efficacy and effectiveness of interventions in an increasingly holistic context. The Cognitive Communication and Hearing Speech Pathology domains will also be considered in the broader professional, regulatory, ethical and legal contexts in which speech pathology practice occurs.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Formulate speech pathology assessment plans to investigate function, activity, and participation in situations where individuals may present within the Cognitive Communication and Hearing Speech Pathology communication domains;
  2. Exemplify holistic analysis and integration of assessment data in situations where individuals may present within the Cognitive Communication and Hearing Speech Pathology communication domains;
  3. Formulate and justify speech pathology intervention plans in situations where individuals may present within Cognitive Communication and Hearing Speech Pathology communication domains;
  4. Contextualise the role and scope of practice of speech pathology within the Cognitive Communication and Hearing Speech Pathology communication domains; and
  5. Authenticate clinical techniques relating to assessment and implementing intervention relevant to situations where individuals may present within the Cognitive Communication and Hearing Speech Pathology communication domains.
