Overview

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to transport patients and other appropriate workers to and from a health care facility or service under emergency circumstances. The unit includes skills for loading, driving and unloading a vehicle safely, and for checking vehicles and equipment in order to restock and remedy faults. This unit applies to pre-hospital/out-of-hospital health care workers.

The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand Standards and industry codes of practice.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce and extend knowledge and skill competence within set and controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes and performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

  • checked the safety of transport vehicle and safely transported 3 emergency patients under operational conditions including:
  • loading and unloading;
  • performing driving skills suited to specific situations and the case being attended;
  • assessing and analysing available driving routes and available resources, and;
  • making decisions that ensure the efficient and safe driving of vehicles under different operational conditions for safe transport of emergency patients.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by the Polytechnic and/or via the Polytechnic e-learning system.

As part of a course

This unit is not compulsory for any specific course. Depending on the course you study, this unit may be taken as an elective.
