Overview

Integrated Practice 1 aims to equip students with the key physiotherapy-specific skills and capabilities to best prepare students for their upcoming clinical placements in an acute care setting. The areas of focus includes elective surgeries, fracture management across the lifespan, trauma and critical care management. These skills add to the foundations of knowledge gained from previous units and will equip students with the necessary level of understanding and skill when managing these patient groups in the clinical setting across the lifespan and inclusive of indigenous and culturally diverse populations. Additionally, students’ ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team will be built on by extending their understanding of roles of other healthcare professionals. Lastly, students will learn about time management skills and ways to prioritise workload.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Articulate and apply an integrated understanding of assessing and managing critical care, surgical and specialist care patient groups across the lifespan and inclusive of people from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background and multicultural communities;
  2. Critically analyse clinical information and develop a safe and effective evidence-based patient-centred assessment and treatment for a complex patient;
  3. Formulate a succinct patient-centred discharge plan involving different members of the multidisciplinary team;
  4. Critically appraise individual practices and provide constructive peer review as appropriate; and
  5. Justify appropriate time management strategy to accurately prioritise patient caseload.
