Overview

This unit will provide students with the underpinning knowledge of nursing and health practice in the context of Australian health care settings. The governance structures for the Registered Nurse will be explored in conjunction with the Registered Nurse’s scope of practice. A holistic approach will be employed to critically reflect on the expectations of the Registered Nurse’s role in provision of holistic and inclusive care to patients and their families/support network and significant others.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Synthesise their understanding of person-centred care, socio-cultural, political, legal and professional factors, and health system structures that influence clinical practice, education and safety in health care services;
  2. Justify a well-developed and articulated position statement on professional accountability;
  3. Exemplify an understanding of cultural awareness and safety in nursing practice;
  4. Demonstrate capacity to influence discussion on a range of contemporary nursing practice issues; and
  5. Elucidate knowledge of clinical governance, risk management, quality and safety for advanced nursing practice.
