Overview

This unit is designed for students with varied mathematical abilities. The unit of study introduces those aspects of algebra and functions that are considered fundamental and that are required in subsequent courses. Students will learn to work with various types of functions in symbolic, graphical, numerical and written form. The unit prepares students to solve problems using mathematical reasoning.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate use of mathematical knowledge to derive a logical and reasoned solution to a problem;
  2. Illustrate visual representations of mathematical problems to help interpret solutions;
  3. Employ use technology such as calculators and computers effectively; and
  4. Apply mathematical language to communicate mathematical ideas, workings and arguments precisely, concisely and logically.
