Overview

Criminological theory has a long history of understanding why people engage in crime and how to rehabilitate and support people to desist form offending. This unit explores historical and recent theological understanding of criminal offending and how this can inform our understanding of countering violent extremism. Students will engage in how established criminological theory can strengthen the practice of countering violent extremism.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Critically review the key theoretical underpinnings in countering violent extremism;
  2. Interrogate how theory is used in current countering violent extremism practice;
  3. Propose how theory can strengthen the practice of countering violent extremism;
  4. Appraise how criminological theory can synthesised to rehabilitate and support people to desist form offending.
