Overview

This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to apply mechanical modelling techniques to computer-aided engineering (CAE). It includes model creation for purposes such as computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) and computer numerical control (CNC) applications, rapid prototyping and stress analysis. It is also used as a basis for generating orthogonal drawings.This unit is suitable for people working in design drafting and those pursuing technical qualifications and careers at engineering technician level.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit's learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

  • following work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safe work practices
  • producing models that are consistent with design information and relevant standards and conventions on at least two occasions
  • applying modelling techniques
  • communicating, participating and negotiating with stakeholders, appropriate licensed technicians and professionals
  • reviewing features, functions and context of engineering modelling including comparing available software
  • creating and manipulating 3D entities using library files and adaptations and accessing supplier catalogues and data bases on at least two occasions
  • creating dimensioned orthographic projections from models on at least two occasions
  • extracting dimensional properties from models
  • post-processing model for analysis or physical modelling
  • commissioning, gaining approval, completing work, documenting, reporting and obtaining sign-off.
    Note: Where a volume and/or frequency is not specified, demonstration must be provided at least once.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by Victoria University and/or via the Victoria University e-learning system.
