Overview

This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to use self-management techniques to perform work ethically and competently and make judgements about work priorities and information requirements to achieve effective working relationships and engineering outcomes at the paraprofessional level. It applies to self-management activities carried out within a range of engineering disciplines.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit's learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

  • following work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safe work practices
  • setting personal goals, completing tasks allocated within time limits and seeking feedback
  • recognising diversity in the work environment when communicating effectively with others
  • working autonomously under broad guidance, guiding teams and accepting appropriate responsibility for planning and managing the work in accordance with procedures
  • communicating in meetings and using feedback to develop ways of improving performance and accessing and using appropriate development opportunities on at least two occasions
  • obtaining and reviewing all relevant commercial documents, legislation codes and national standards on at least two occasions
  • using technology to appropriately manage work priorities and commitments and preparing work plans, programs and/or budgets in accordance with procedures
  • monitoring and reviewing or modifying plans to achieve targets by the effective and efficient use of resources on at least two occasions
  • contributing to the smooth introduction of change including communicating changes to be implemented
  • providing regular progress reports to others in accordance with procedures.
    Note: Where a volume and/or frequency is not specified, demonstration must be provided at least once.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by Victoria University and/or via the Victoria University e-learning system.
