Overview

This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to understand and calculate force systems within simple beam structures. It involves solving simple engineering problems involving forces and moments and to determining nominal sizes of simple beams subject to loading.
The unit applies to work in all manufacturing and engineering workplace environments. All work is carried out under supervision.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit's learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work-based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

  • determining the resultant and equilibrant of systems of coplanar forces on at least two occasions
  • determining nominal sizes for simple horizontal beam subject to a combination of uniform and point loading
  • calculating force systems within simple beam structures on at least two occasions.
Note: Where a volume and/or frequency is not specified, demonstration must be provided at least once.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by Victoria University and/or via the Victoria University e-learning system.
