Overview

This unit provides students with the necessary skills and knowledge to set up and manage all resources and services necessary for the efficient and safe operation of a construction site on building and infrastructure projects. Students will gain a detailed insight into the site establishment and design process, which includes coordinating material storage and circulation, managing plant and equipment, and attending to trades. Additionally, students will learn how to undertake comprehensive risk assessments for on-site OH&S and environmental hazards to comply with legislative and regulatory requirements. Methods of protecting surrounding environments from pollutants generated by construction activities and waste reduction strategies will also be carefully examined. This unit incorporates Work Integrated Learning (WiL) through a visit to a construction site and interaction with the construction professionals.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Articulate a practical understanding of the site establishment, preparation and protection processes across building and infrastructure projects;
  2. Design construction sites for sustainable workforce management and efficient on-site logistics;
  3. Adapt the legislative and regulatory requirements including work health and safety and environmental protection legislation, codes of practice for safe working in the construction industry; safe work method statements (SWMS) and environmental effect statements (EES);
  4. Critically evaluate on-site hazards and risks relating to health, safety and environment including review and control measures; and
  5. Analyse and assess environmental protection requirements and waste minimisation measures relevant to construction site operations.
