Overview

This unit explores the principles and applications of system dynamics in the construction industry, covering feedback loops, stock and flow structures, and time delays. Students will develop and analyse dynamic models to simulate construction processes, identify bottlenecks, and optimise resource allocation. Emphasising sustainable practices, the unit examines environmental and economic impacts on construction projects. Through simulation models, students will predict project behaviour under various scenarios, enabling proactive management of time, cost, and quality. The unit merges theory with practice, using advanced system dynamics tools to boost performance in complex, large-scale construction projects.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Evaluate construction systems using system dynamics principles to identify and interpret key feedback loops and analyse the impacts of various project variables on overall performance;
  2. Design and create dynamic models to simulate construction processes, enabling the prediction of project bottlenecks, optimisation of resource allocation, and enhancement of decision-making capabilities;
  3. Implement sustainable practices within system dynamics models, evaluate the environmental and economic impacts of construction activities, and propose strategies for sustainable project management;
  4. Interpret complex system dynamics analyses effectively, using advanced digital tools and visualisations to present findings to stakeholders and collaboratively develop solutions for construction project challenges; and
  5. Exemplify effective leadership through creative and efficient project management to enhance accuracy, efficiency and sustainability.
