Overview

In this unit, students will gain an understanding of cutting-edge technologies and methodologies shaping the future of the construction industry. They will explore the practical application of emerging technologies such as automated and robotic construction, artificial intelligence (AI), modular construction, and advanced materials. These technologies will be evaluated for their ability to enhance project efficiency, accuracy, and sustainability while addressing contemporary construction challenges. Through interaction with industry professionals, practical applications and case studies, students will develop the skills necessary to integrate and manage advanced technologies in complex construction projects. The unit also further develops students’ knowledge of ethical practices to ensure that technologies are adopted responsibly, with careful consideration of their social and environmental impacts.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Critique various advanced construction technologies, assessing their capabilities, limitations, and impacts on the construction industry;
  2. Implement strategic technological solutions, such as AI and automated systems, in construction project management to enhance project outcomes;
  3. Advocate for and implement sustainable construction technologies and practices that minimise environmental impact and promote long-term sustainability in the construction sector;
  4. Conceptualise innovative solutions and applications for construction technology, taking into account the ethical implications and responsible use of digital technologies; and
  5. Exhibit leadership in the integration and management of new technologies in construction projects, including navigating the challenges of adoption among teams and stakeholders.
