Overview

This unit introduces students to advanced digital construction management systems. These systems are generally defined as digital technologies and processes for managing construction and engineering activities, including, but not limited to cloud-based advanced decision-support technologies for infrastructure planning and coordination, Building Information Modelling (BIM), and digital 3D design software. Advanced digital construction is a highly data-driven approach that makes use of digital tools to make processes more efficient and ensure a high quality of work. Through advanced data analytics and digital technologies, this unit aims to cultivate critical thinking, problem-solving and decision-making skills to address complex challenges in advanced digital construction implementation. It will also provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to lead in an increasingly technologically advanced environment.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Critically assess the integration of emerging digital technologies into construction practices, and devise strategic solutions to overcome implementation challenges;
  2. Justify the selection of the most appropriate digital technologies for specific construction applications to optimise efficiency and quality in project management and drive sustainable construction outcomes;
  3. Analyse and interpret complex data from advanced digital construction management systems (such as BIM) using advanced analytics, to make informed decisions that enhance construction project outcomes; and
  4. Exhibit leadership and motivate teams to maximise the digital benefits across all project phases.
