Overview

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to install and maintain roadside fixtures in civil construction, including erecting guardrails, finish ends and road fencing, and installing guide posts and delineators and maintaining signs.
It applies to those working in operational roles. They generally work under supervision to undertake a prescribed range of functions involving known routines and procedures and take some responsibility for the quality of work outcomes.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:
• install and maintain roadside fixtures on at least two occasions, including:
• completing the following as an individual or as a member of a two to three person team:
• installing ten metres of guardrail and finish ends
• installing two guide posts and delineators
• replacing two signs
• erecting ten metres of roadside fencing to specification
• carrying out repair to roadside fixtures
• performing maintenance on signs
• conducting a clean-up on completion of work.
During the above, the candidate must:
• locate and apply required documentation, policies and procedures
• implement the requirements, procedures and techniques for installing and maintaining roadside fixtures, including:
• identifying and applying relevant drawings and job specifications to all work activities
• confirming safety requirements
• identifying, addressing and reporting potential hazards and risks
• identifying, obtaining, confirming and implementing requirements for signage and barriers
• selecting and checking for faults tools and equipment required to carry out tasks
• identifying, addressing and reporting environmental issues and ground conditions
• work with others to install and maintain roadside fixtures in a way that meets required outcomes, including:
• preparing for and organising work activities to meet task requirements
• communicating with others to receive and clarify work instructions
• using communication techniques and aids to advise others of work activity and exclusion zones
• monitoring hazards and identifying changes to work environment.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by Victoria University and/or via the Victoria University e-learning system.
