This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to line tunnels in civil construction, including drilling and installing rock bolts, applying reinforcing mesh and shotcreting the tunnel face.It applies to those working in operational roles. They generally work under minimal supervision to undertake a broad range of tasks in varied work contexts, using some discretion and judgement in selecting equipment, services or contingency measures.
Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.
Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:
• line tunnel on at least two occasions, including:
• drilling and installing rock bolts, applying reinforcing mesh and shotcreting at least a five lineal metre section of tunnel.
During the above, the candidate must:
• locate and apply required documentation, policies and procedures
• implement the requirements and techniques for the completion of lining tunnels, including:
• applying equipment and manual handling techniques
• selecting and using required tools and equipment
• identifying, reporting and recording hazards and risks
• interpreting engineering drawings
• identifying and reporting defects
• work with others to undertake and complete the lining of tunnels that meets all required outcomes, including:
• organising work activities to meet task requirements
• communicating with others to receive and clarify work instructions
• using communication techniques and systems to advise others of work activity and exclusion zones.
The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by Victoria University and/or via the Victoria University e-learning system.
