Overview

This is the second unit with practicum elements within the Master of Clinical Exercise Science and Rehabilitation. Students integrate new information and understanding of knowledge, skills and experiences acquired to date to engage in authentic practitioner experiences, adhering to the underpinning person-centred and value-based care principles scaffolded across the course. To better facilitate full-time practicum placements, this unit is delivered online self-paced with reduced contact hours.

In this unit, students will clarify their understanding of the Australian health care sector and contextualise the role of accredited exercise physiologists (AEP) within the compensable scheme framework. In doing so, students will explore and delineate the scopes of practice of other health professionals with whom an AEP may collaborate. By understanding the broader healthcare system and the roles of health professions within it, students will apply this to demonstrate client and interprofessional communication reflective of the expected standard of written communication in industry.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Clarify understanding of compensable scheme frameworks in the Australian healthcare landscape, and canvass the requirements for AEPs working in these settings;
  2. Discriminate between the scopes of practice and professional competencies of other allied health professions, and advocate for exercise physiologists within the context of interprofessional practice;
  3. Compose effective interprofessional communication necessary for collaborative practice with other professionals; and
  4. Design and implement safe, effective, and individualised treatment plans for clients in collaboration with other healthcare professionals.
