Overview

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required by EAL learners with little or no formal education to
communicate basic personal information and needs. It focuses on participating in simple highly familiar conversations, and responding to simple, highly familiar requests for personal information.
The outcomes described in this unit relate to:

  • the Australian Core Skill Framework (ACSF). They contribute to the achievement of ACSF indicators of competence in Oral
    Communication at Pre Level 1 and Level 1, and
  • the ISLPR (International Second Language Proficiency Ratings) descriptors for Speaking and Listening. They partly contribute to the achievement of Speaking 1 and Listening 1.
    This unit applies to participants who need to develop basic English language speaking and listening skills to satisfy immediate personal and survival needs in familiar and highly predictable contexts.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit's learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work-based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

  • participate in two highly familiar conversations to demonstrate ability to:
  • use and respond to basic greetings
  • give basic personal information, including a personal preference
  • make and respond to two short simple, highly predictable requests for basic personal information and immediate needs.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by the VU Polytechnic and/or via the Victoria University Polytechnic e-Learning system.
