This unit provides students with high level reading skills and strategies needed to manage and comprehend academic texts in the form of case scenarios and tasks while under time pressure. In particular, practice will be provided in dividing typical academic English language texts into sections with a view to formulating a “plan of attack” to approach an exam OSCE. Moreover, practice in understanding of cohesive devices, paragraph structure and both overt and inferred meaning will be provided. Adjunct reading skills such as skimming and scanning for gist and detail as well as vocabulary building will be practised.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
Show comprehension of denoted and connoted details in lengthy texts through successful performances of simulated practice OSCEs; and
Demonstrate use of both appropriate formal and informal vocabulary in simulated performances of practice OSCEs.
