Overview

This unit introduces advanced quantity surveying and cost management concepts as required by a practitioner in the contemporary construction industry. The students investigate concepts and knowledge areas in post-contractual practices and administration, including preparation of interim bills, claims and variations management, cost management and controlling strategies of earned value analysis, value engineering and managing price fluctuations. Students propose and implement the concepts and theories in a real-world application. The unit also covers professional ethics in quantity surveying practices as per the Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (AIQS) ethics standards and codes.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Investigate the role of quantity surveyor throughout the building construction process from inception to completion and handover, focusing on post-contract advanced cost management and controlling strategies;
  2. Critically review the process of pre-contract and post-contract administration from cost and resource management perspective;
  3. Compose and evaluate progress claims, variations, claims and final bill at the completion stage;
  4. Exhibit information technology application skills for quantity surveying practices and for the evolving role of quantity surveyor in digital construction; and
  5. Exemplify knowledge of the ethical and professional the ethical behaviour requirements of a quantity surveyor in a complex construction environment.
