Overview

This unit will explore how organic chemistry, the study of carbon containing compounds, has been used to address countless issues or problems within a range of industries including food, pharmaceutical, petrochemical, biotechnological and plastics. In doing so, the unit will cover the structure, naming, properties, composition, preparation and reactions of saturated, unsaturated and aromatic compounds. Students will identify and conduct an investigation within a localised context.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Describe the structure and properties of different classes of organic functional compounds;
  2. Explain abstract chemical concepts use the lexicon of science;
  3. Review a range of scientific and media journal articles and discuss the chemical processes, claims and conclusions used to problem solve contemporary problems; and
  4. Select appropriate techniques and resources for observing, testing and measuring organic chemical reactions.
