Overview

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to apply basic metal fabrication techniques.
It requires the ability to set up and operate equipment used for fabrication processes and carry out assembly techniques.
The unit also includes basic computations and marking out skills related to various fabrication processes.The unit applies to a person preparing for further study and/or employment in the manufacturing, engineering and related industries such as an apprenticeship.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit's learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work-based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

  • prepare work plan, set up for and perform basic fabrication techniques using at least three (3) different types of metal fabrication equipment
  • fabricated components are assembled consistent with work plan.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by Victoria University and/or via the Victoria University e-learning system.
