Overview

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to undertake remedial massage consultations in a clinical setting. This includes provision of remedial massage treatments, as well as clinic preparation for consultation, client assessment and monitoring of client progress and outcomes. It incorporates understanding of industry practices and professional development opportunities for remedial massage therapists.This unit applies to remedial massage therapists.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each units learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

  • perform the activities outlined in the performance criteria of this unit during a period of at least 200 hours of massage clinic work that involves:
  • 40 hours of massage consultations including assessment and treatment and incorporating the following treatment techniques:

    compressions
    effleurage
    friction techniques
    gliding strokes
    petrissage
    rocking
    tapotement

  • 100 hours of massage consultations of one hour duration including assessment and treatment incorporating the following treatment techniques:

    compressive techniques
    deep pressure massage
    friction techniques
    lymphatic massage
    muscle energy techniques
    myofascial techniques without skin penetration
    passive movement at joints
    stretching techniques
    thermotherapy
    trigger point techniques without skin penetration

  • clients from different stages of life with varied presentations
  • monitoring and evaluating remedial massage treatments provided to at least three different clients with at least three treatments per client.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by Victoria University and/or via the Victoria University e-learning system.
