Overview

The unit is designed to provide an introduction to basic Chinese with the emphasis on developing listening and speaking skills. In this unit, students will learn expressions used in different situations, e.g. to apologise, praise, congratulate and persuade others. The unit aims at expanding students’ Chinese vocabulary and to give students an intermediate level of Chinese grammar.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Apply appropriate expressions used in different situations, e.g. to apologize, praise, congratulate and persuade others;
  2. Utilise Chinese vocabulary and intermediate level grammatical knowledge;
  3. Explain China’s traditional and contemporary culture; and
  4. Read and write up to 225 Chinese words cumulatively.

Required reading

The course is based on the textbook, Experience Chinese-Business Communication in Chinese and exercise book. Lecture notes, selected articles and case studies will be provided by or referred to by lecturer. Students will receive a book loan from Victoria Business Confucius Institute if required.
