Overview

This unit will introduce principles and theories of general chemistry including matter and energy, atomic and molecular structure, symbols and formulae, nomenclature, the periodic table, bonding, equations, reactions and phases of change. The mole concept will be introduced to explain the relative masses of different elements and to determine the molar mass of compounds. Students will develop competency in the scientific method of making observations, formulating hypotheses and conducting experiments.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Describe and classify matter atoms and molecules according to their physical and chemical properties;
  2. Explain chemical understanding and findings through a range of mediums including the use of appropriate representation, language and nomenclature;
  3. Apply a range of scientific investigations, including the collection and analysis of qualitative and quantitative data and interpretation of evidence; and
  4. Discuss scientific findings of experimental results including computation, error analysis, and graphic data displays.
