Complex Cases in Clinical Exercise Physiology

This unit advances students’ application of evidence-based practice and person-centred care, requiring students to utilise an applied level of clinical reasoning to inform client management as an exercise physiologist. This unit scaffolds on previous units related to different pathophysiology domains and clinical practice, bringing them together to reflect the complex nature of many patient presentations. Students must consider and document their management of a client they have already worked with during internal placement hours in the VUCER clinic. This process reflects a patient summary and handover students may experience as graduates working within an interdisciplinary health care setting. With an initial management plan established, students are presented with a hypothetical case event that significantly impacts the client. Students must critically evaluate the new information and circumstances and make suitable adjustments to their client management plan, including consideration of the involvement of other health care professionals. Throughout the unit, students will explore and integrate culturally safe, inclusive, sensitive, respectful, and ethically sound decisions according to person-centred care principles.
