This unit connects with the course learning outcomes of demonstrating an understanding of a broad and coherent body of knowledge of content, pedagogy, curriculum and assessment in relation to literacy in a primary school setting. The unit will enable you to enhance your critical awareness of historical, political and global influences on curriculum and assessment in literacy through a social justice lens. This specialised primary knowledge will equip you with the necessary skills to effectively implement effective expert teaching and learning strategies during your final primary placement. Through a literacy lens, you will demonstrate understandings about how to engage parents/carers in the educative process and how to report on student achievement in literacy. In this unit, your professional acumen and expert knowledge will be further demonstrated as you undertake Element 4 of the Assessment for Graduate Teaching (AfGT). In this task, you will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of legislative requirements in relation to students with disabilities, inclusion and respect of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, their languages and cultures, and how to manage challenging behaviour.
